Hidden Secrets - March 2008

Redemption is an independent, point & click adventure game in a first person perspective, created, developed and produced by Loris Stavrinides in 2005 as part of his Postgraduate degree course in Design for Interactive Media in the Lansdown Centre of Electronic Arts in the Middlesex University, UK. Aim of the project was to create an adventure experience purely made in Adobe Flash as a way for extending skills in interactive design, ActionScript programming and 3D design. Throughout the development progress Redemption became a much more ambitious project than what was met to be, and as a result was the development of a fully playable demo of an adventure game with fully designed environments, characters and an extensive storyline and gameplay.

Hidden Secrets - March 2008

Redemption has a surreal approach to traditional Adventure Games in first perspective, and that was done in purpose in order to try and deliver a different engaging experience. In contrast with usual Adventure Games the player doesn't discover the plot and game objectives through progressing within the game. In this case the main plot and objectives can be learned from the first part of the gameplay and after that is a ghost hunt based on puzzle solving.

The extensive storyline can be learned within the game in great detail, however, here is a brief overview:

A French painter called Damien Vasser has discovered a secret power for making all his dreams come true by gaining an incredible talent that offered him a lot of success. But unfortunately for him, his corruption for wealth and power caused this power to release his sins in real form through his painting work. 7 Women, representing the 7 deadly sins where released, destroying Damien's life and corrupting the world around them. The only solution to stop this was the entrapment of himself and all 7 women on a dimension within his paintings, in his corrupted house and appearing as ghosts. Damien now asks for a chance of Redemption to be released from his prison by the visitor who will need to find and capture all 7 women and destroy them.

The game is about this surreal quest for releasing Damien Vasser from his sins. Search, Catch and Destroy the 7 Sins.

The entire project was fully created and developed by Loris Stavrinides, with some help and support by friends and tutors. The game world was created in 3D Studio Max 7 and rendered with the VRay rendering engine. Character designs where done in Poser 6 and post-production was done with Photoshop CS2. The entire game was developed in Flash MX 2004 pro with ActionScript2.

The objective of this game was to portrait a surreal experience to the user, and so each scene was rendered through dramatic angles to enhance the experience, the surrealism and the fact that the player is observing this world from a different level than the usual first-person perspective. Great attention was also given to the textures used for every scene along with the light and shadow contrast for creating a corrupted, mysterious and deep environment. Sound FX and background ambience where also added for each scene to enhance the experience.
